Maggie was Ivy's partner when they were strays. Lisa our friend rescued both of them who were a lot thinner then they are now. Lisa runs Happy Tails Rescue in Alabama whom we work with . After an initial physical they discovered Maggie had a medium case of heart worm.. Lisa taught us to use the slow kill method versus the fast kill . Below she explains:
SLIGHT/MEDIUM heart worm positive. Don't let that scare you! Most vets treat heart worms with the "fast kill method" that involves a series of injections of poison that kills the adult heart worms on the heart. That method is VERY hard on the dog and often lethal. We use the "slow kill method", which kills the microfilariae (baby heart worms in the blood before they attach to the heart). We use ivermectin given by mouth every other week for a year. The slow kill method kills the babies in the blood (the exact same thing that heart worm preventative does) and let's the adult worms on the heart die of natural causes. Because Maggie is slight/ Medium positive, that means she only has one on her heart. The slow kill method is not hard on the dog and you will not see a difference in behavior. You do not have to confine the dog for weeks like you do with the fast kill method.
We provide the medication until she tests negative. I wouldn't hesitate to adopt a dog with slight heart worm + for my family (I have a 6yr old and 2 year old). Hope and Laura have children also.
I will not treat with the fast kill method again. Three yrs ago we treated one rescue dog with that method and it was very hard on the dog and we thought we were going to loose her. In our rescue, we only use slow kill. Let me know if you have any questions. I would be happy to answer them here.
So Maggie has medication. This does not stop her from being a great jack russel mix She is very very smart. And loves to be cuddled.
She does have the jack russel traits, but we are working on them. Old habits die hard...
She will let you know if something is not right.. Great family dog..

A greatful Rescue
Ask any rescue and they will tell you that a rescue dog is a grateful dog. I realized that today with our group. Ivy, greyhound mix, was a stray and had to fend for herself. As a result, she has food issues. She is getting so much better, tonight she ate in the kitchen with dogs on both sides of her. She did great. Looked at me twice while eating as to see if I was watching this positive behavior!! She comes back to you she is called, is very affectionate and really wants to please you.
Ivy is really becoming a nice family dog. She will make a wonderful pet for any family.
Ivy went up to our pond and camper with us. She enjoyed being able to go in the woods and investigate with the other dogs. I would call each of them every 15 minutes and when they came back received a biscuit which they enjoyed. It only took a few times for them to get the idea!1
When it became dark each dog found a place and fell asleep with Ivy looking as if she was smiling.

BUSY
We have been so busy at Laura's Hope Rescue. We rescued and adopted 18 puppies!! Lisa and Richard from Happy Tails Rescue, Alabama brought up our puppies While they were here they showed Sabryna and Scott how to give shots. Explained how we could tell how old puppies were. And many other things. It was a pleasure to finally meet these dedicated people and we are happy have joined forces with them to find dogs their fur ever homes.

Hope,
It was nice meeting you (& the brood). Even though we haven't had her long, I wanted to give you a quick update on Sylvia. She has a vet appt scheduled on June 2nd. She's adjusting very well and I think she likes it here as much as we like having her here. Her first two nights were very quiet. Of course I slept on a mattress with her in her room. It's my son's turn tonight and then we'll try it on her own.
She is still very calm when held, but she is definitely active when on her own. She loves our cats, but unfortunately the feeling isn't mutual. We're introducing her to the neighborhood, both people and dogs, as she seems very comfortable with people but not so much with many other things. She is very skittish of noises and seeing dogs at a distance. We've walked her on the leash down to my mom's for a visit (her cat was not fond of Sylvia either).
In typical lab fashion, she chews on anything and everything, with a preference to shoes and not her puppy approved toys. In Aus. Shepard fashion, she likes to grab at your pants when you walk/run with her. We're getting the best of both worlds here. She's doing a pretty good job of listening to no when she is trying to "herd us".
The kids love her, and she's very good with Jordan. I think she is going to be a great addition to our home. We'll keep you updated as she grows. Oh, and she gives the best kisses!
